Chapter 14

Shane parked the car next to their tents and cut the engine.

“Let’s go and sit on the log over there,” Krista said, handing him one of the beers they’d brought back with them from the Moose Head Lodge.

The sun had almost dipped behind the mountains, already turning them a delicate shade of pink. Everything was so quiet and peaceful here, and he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so quiet and peaceful too.

They sipped their beers, but soon the flaming mozzies ruined the mood. He swotted one away from his face then swiped at one hovering above Krista’s head.

“They’re out in full force tonight,” Shane said as they ducked back into the car to finish their drinks.

Krista sat behind the wheel, insisting he take the passenger side so he had more room for his legs, and they set about making plans for tomorrow’s hike to the Edith Cavell glacier. Krista’s hair fell around her face as she read the trail guide on her lap.

“It says here ‘Prepare yourself for some stunning mountain views’,” she said. “You know what that means?”

“Prepare yourself for a beast of a climb.”

“Correct. No pain, no gain.” Krista snickered.

Shane finished his beer. Krista finished hers.

Tucking her legs under her, she cozied up in the driver’s seat, seemingly in no rush to get to her tent. Shane stretched out his legs in the footwell, in no rush either.

“The Icefields Parkway bike ride was a fun experience,” Krista said. “I wonder how much money you all raised.”

“I heard close to two million.”

Krista whistled. “That’s awesome.”

Shane agreed. It had felt good taking part in an event that would ultimately benefit others. Though he wasn’t sure if his left thigh would agree. He’d been ignoring the tightness for a few days, but it was becoming clear that he may have pulled something during the race. With the heel of his palm, he kneaded the top of his leg.

“Is your thigh still bothering you?” Krista asked. “Want me to take a look at it for you?”

Have Krista touch him so close to his groin?

He swallowed. “It’s okay. You’re on holiday, and I—”

“Shane, it really isn’t a problem, especially after all you’ve done for me. I can at least check you over and make sure it’s nothing serious that will affect your training next week.” Krista pushed her car door open then looked over her shoulder. “Your tent or mine?”

“Mine,” Shane almost growled. Just the thought of having Krista in his tent again made him hard, but she was right. If he’d pulled a muscle, it needed to be seen to. As it was, this week off—though much needed—had set his schedule back, and he couldn’t afford any more delays in his training, not with the Pan Pacific Championships coming up at the end of the year.

And treatment from Krista wouldn’t take long. It wasn’t like she’d be giving him an all-over body massage.

Great.

Now he had another image to get out of his head.

“You coming?” she called out.

And another one.
